The Mathematical and Geometrical forms of the Hurricane in the Totonac Flyers’ Dance at Tajin

Abstract: Mesoamerican religions present complex cosmovisions populated by a bewildering array of personified forces of nature and supernatural beings that can exhibit many transformational aspects such as atmospheric forces or elements. This paper analyzes the figure of the hurricane in the Totonac culture of the Gulf of Mexico, especially in Tajin, in its mathematical and geometrical forms expressed in the Flyers’ Dance. I discuss how the Flyer dancers control the arrival and the movements of the hurricane with the dance.
Resumen: Las religiones de Mesoamérica presentan complejas cosmovisiones, o visiones del mundo, que son populadas de un sin fin de fuerzas de la naturaleza y de lo sobrenatural. Estas fuerzas pueden monstrar múltiples características y por eso, se identifican, a menudo, con agentes atmosféricos o elementos metereológicos. Este artículo quiere analizar la figura del huracán en la cultura totonaca de la Costa del Golfo, especialmente en el territorio de El Tajin, figura que se expresa en sus posibles formas matemáticas y geométricas en la Danza de los Voladores. En el artículo argumento como los danzantes voladores gracias a la danza logran controlar la llegada y los movimientos del huracán.
Zusammenfassung: Die Religionen Mesoamerikas präsentieren komplexe Weltanschauungen oder Visionen der Welt, die von einer Vielzahl von Kräften der Natur und des Übernatürlichen bevölkert sind. Diese Kräfte können mehrere Eigenschaften aufweisen und werden daher oft mit atmosphärischen oder meteorologischen Phänomenen identifiziert. Dieser Artikel analysiert die Figur des Wirbelsturms in der totonakischen Kultur der Golfküste, insbesondere im Gebiet von El Tajin, eine Figur, die in ihren möglichen mathematischen und geometrischen Formen im Tanz der Flieger zum Ausdruck kommt. In dem Artikel argumentiere ich, dass es den akrobatischen Tänzern dank ihrer Performance gelingt, die Ankunft und die Bewegungen des Hurrikans zu kontrollieren.

Esculturas de rostros humanos con parálisis facial en Teotihuacan

Abstract: Pertinent formal and technological characteristics of three stone sculptures of human faces with facial paralysis recovered from the vicinity of the Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacan are evaluated. These unique stone sculptures are considered in terms of the relative chronology of technological advances at this early urban and religious center, permitting the broad contextualization of these artifacts within the sculptural corpus of Teotihuacan. Another stone sculpture of a human face with facial paralysis was found on the Street of the Dead (Matos Moctezuma 1970 and 1980). However, these unique finds have not been considered in detail in catalogs and studies of Teotihuacan stone sculptures. Despite having been recovered on the surface of the Plaza of the Moon, mention of these rare finds is largely absent from publications on the extensive archaeological investigations carried out in and around the Pyramid of the Moon Architectural Complex since the 1960s. The lack of data on the original archaeological context and precise chronology of these unique artifacts presents an important limitation. However, stylistic and technological studies in conjunction with consideration of these artifacts within the context of the visual communication system of Teotihuacan can provide important insights into the possible function and relative chronology of these exceptional sculptures.
Resumen: Se evalúan las características formales y tecnológicas pertinentes de tres esculturas de piedra de rostros humanos con parálisis facial recuperadas en las inmediaciones de la Pirámide de la Luna en Teotihuacán. Estas singulares esculturas de piedra son consideradas en términos de la cronología relativa de los avances tecnológicos en este temprano centro urbano y religioso, permitiendo su amplia contextualización dentro del corpus escultórico de Teotihuacan. Otra escultura de piedra de un rostro humano con parálisis facial fue encontrada en la Calzada de los Muertos (Matos Moctezuma 1970 y 1980). Sin embargo, estos hallazgos únicos no han sido considerados en detalle en los catálogos y estudios de las esculturas de piedra teotihuacanas. A pesar de haber sido recuperados en la superficie de la Plaza de la Luna, la mención de estos raros hallazgos está en gran medida ausente de las publicaciones sobre las extensas investigaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en el complejo arquitectónico de la Pirámide de la Luna y sus alrededores desde la década de 1960. La falta de datos sobre el contexto arqueológico original y la cronología precisa de estos artefactos únicos presenta una grave limitación. Sin embargo, los estudios estilísticos y tecnológicos, junto con la consideración de estos artefactos dentro del contexto del sistema de comunicación visual de Teotihuacan, pueden proporcionar importantes datos sobre la posible función y la cronología relativa de estas excepcionales esculturas.
Zusammenfassung: Dieser Text analysiert die einschlägigen stilistischen und technologischen Merkmale dreier Steinskulpturen von menschlichen Gesichtern mit Gesichtslähmung, die in der Nähe der Mondpyramide in Teotihuacan gefunden wurden. Diese können in Hinblick auf die relative Chronologie des technologischen Fortschritts innerhalb des skulpturalen Korpus von Teotihuacan kontextualisiert werden. Eine weitere Skulptur eines menschlichen Gesichts mit Gesichtslähmung wurde auf der Straße der Toten gefunden (Matos Moctezuma 1970 und 1980). Jedoch sind diese einzigartigen Funde trotz ihrer Bergung an der Oberfläche der Plaza de la Luna sowohl in Katalogen und Studien über die Steinskulpturen von Teotihuacan als auch in den Publikationen über die archäologischen Untersuchungen des Architekturkomplexes der Mondpyramide kaum berücksichtigt worden. Das Fehlen von Daten zum ursprünglichen archäologischen Kontext und zur chronologischen Einordnung dieser Skulpturen stellt eine bedeutende Einschränkung dar; trotzdem können stilistische und technologische Untersuchungen in Verbindung mit einer Analyse der Bildsprache von Teotihuacan wichtige Erkenntnisse über die mögliche Funktion und relative Chronologie dieser außergewöhnlichen Skulpturen liefern.

Who commissioned the Codex Borbonicus?

Abstract: The article summarizes the historical data relating to the period, characters, and factors that may have led to the creation of the Codex Borbonicus, one of the most important early colonial Nahua painted books. It proposes that a cihuacoatl tecuhtli and governor of Mexico-Tenochtitlan after the conquest, Motelchiuhtzin, baptized as Andrés de Tapia, may have been behind the creation of the manuscript, which eventually reached Spain with Tapia’s son, Hernando, when he traveled there to petition for the rights of his family.
Resumen: El artículo presenta la información histórica existente acerca del periodo, de personas y motivos que podrían haber llevado a la creación del llamado Códice Borbónico, uno de los manuscritos pictográficos nahuas más importantes de la época colonial temprana. Se propone que el libro pintado fue mandado hacer por Motelchiuhtzin, bautizado como Andrés de Tapia, cihuacoatl tecuhtli y gobernador de Mexico-Tenochtitlan después de la conquista, para que su hijo Hernando lo llevara a España a la corte de Carlos V para recibir los títulos de nobleza.
Zusammenfassung: Der Artikel fasst die verfügbaren historischen Daten zusammen, die zur Entstehung des Codex Borbonicus, einer der wichtigsten frühkolonialen Bilderhandschriften der Nahua, geführt haben könnten. Die Untersuchung versucht zu rekonstruieren, welche Personen und Motive daran beteiligt waren. Die Autoren gelangen zu dem Ergebnis, dass Motelchiuhtzin, ein Mitglied des aztekischen Hochadels, cihuacoatl tecuhtli und Gouverneur von Mexiko-Tenochtitlan, als Auftraggeber hinter der Erstellung des Dokuments stehen könnte. Motelchiuhtzin wurde nach der spanischen Eroberung getauft unter dem Namen Andrés de Tapia. Der Codex gelangte schließlich nach Spanien durch die Reise des Hernando de Tapia, dem Sohn des Motelchiuhtzin, welcher dort die Rechte seiner Familie einforderte.

Restoring Natural Capital, Respecting Communal Norms, Implementing a Design/Build Model

Abstract: We investigate the process by which a Yucatan Maya community restored the landscape around its cenote. The degraded area of this ecologically and culturally important karstic pool was rehabilitated through a partnership between the community and a non-profit group, Maya Research Program. Landscape designers, a horticulturalist, and applied anthropologists facilitated a collaborative design-build process guided by village stakeholders. Involvement of numerous village groups bolstered enthusiasm toward project completion. The community considered how the cenote could function: environmentally, as part of the ecosystem; socio-culturally, as a focus of town life and subject of traditional legends; and economically, as an eco-tourism destination.
Resumen: En este articulo investigamos el proceso mediante el cual una comunidad maya de Yucatán restauró el paisaje alrededor de su cenote. La zona degradada de este pozo kárstico de importancia ecológica y cultural se rehabilitó mediante una asociación entre la comunidad y un grupo sin ánimo de lucro, el Maya Research Program. Diseñadores paisajísticos, un horticultor y antropólogos facilitaron un proceso de diseño y construcción en colaboración con las partes interesadas del pueblo. La participación de numerosos grupos de la aldea reforzó el entusiasmo por la finalización del proyecto. La comunidad consideró cómo podría funcionar el cenote: ambientalmente, como parte del ecosistema; socioculturalmente, como centro de la vida del pueblo y objeto de leyendas tradicionales; y económicamente, como destino ecoturístico.
Zusammenfassung: Eine Maya-Gemeinde hat die zerstörte Umgebung ihres Cenotes wiederhergestellt. Das Gebiet des ökologisch und kulturell wichtigen Karstbeckens konnte durch eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Gemeinde und dem Maya Research Program renaturiert werden. Landschaftsarchitekten, Gartenbauexperten und Ethnologen planten und verwirklichten, zusammen mit verschiedenen Interessensgruppen des Dorfes, den Umbau. Durch die Einbindung der lokalen Gruppen erreichte das Projekt eine hohe Akzeptanz in der Bevölkerung. Der Cenote ist nun Mittelpunkt des Dorflebens, Gegenstand traditioneller Legenden und als Ziel von Öko-Touristen auch ein wichtiger wirtschaftlicher Faktor.

Nueva Jerusalén, un laberinto en el sur de Quintana Roo

Abstract: On December 24, 2020, the author, together with Eduardo González, Ernesto Hernández, Fernando Oliveroz and Carlos Uc, visited a little-known site in the south of Quintana Roo, just 250 m west of the town of Nueva Jerusalen, in the Municipality of Bacalar. Inside the main mound, a labyrinth of chambers with three levels and at least 20 corridors or rooms was found. This building is added to the other four or five of its kind found in Oxkintok, Toniná, Yaxchilán and La Muerta.
Resumen: El 24 de diciembre de 2020, el autor, en conjunto con Eduardo González, Ernesto Hernández, Fernando Oliveroz y Carlos Uc, visitaron un sitio poco conocido en el sur de Quintana Roo, a escasos 250 m al poniente del poblado de Nueva Jerusalén, en el Municipio de Bacalar. Dentro del montículo principal se encontró un laberinto de cámaras con tres niveles y al menos 20 crujías o habitaciones, este edificio se suma a los otros cuatro o cinco de su tipo que se encuentran en Oxkintok, Toniná, Yaxchilán y La Muerta.
Zusammenfassung: Am 24. Dezember 2020 besuchte der Autor zusammen mit Eduardo González, Ernesto Hernández, Fernando Oliveroz und Carlos Uc eine wenig bekannte Ruinenstätte nur 250 m westlich der Stadt Nueva Jerusalén im Municipio Bacalar, Quintana Roo. Im Inneren der größten Struktur befindet sich ein Labyrinth von Räumen, das sich über drei Stockwerke erstreckt. Bei der Erkundung wurden mindestens 20 Gänge und Wohnräume entdeckt. Ähnliche Gebäudestrukturen sind aus den Fundorten Oxkintok, Toniná, Yaxchilán und La Muerta bekannt.

Anthropomorphic Stone Sculptures from the Classic Period at Santo Nombre, Puebla, Mexico

Abstract: During excavations carried out at the Classic settlement of Santo Nombre, Puebla, in 2009 and 2010, a group of five small Teotihuacan-style sculptures, four carved in basalt and one in limestone, was recovered. The find was made on the floor of the plaza of a three-temple architectural complex, and included many ceramic, shell, lapidary, and bone ritual objects; specifically, they were found in front of the staircase of the tallest of the three buildings, which was oriented towards the west. The sculptures, some mexicon Vol. XLIII Oktober 2021 of them found intact and others fragmented, along with the ritual objects, were intentionally destroyed and burned during a termination ritual that took place around AD 350. The sculptures take the form of rectangular busts. Their facial expressions indicate they represent lifeless personages and they wear headdresses and ear ornaments. This article describes the context of the finding, compares the style of the Santo Nombre sculptures with Teotihuacan and other Classic-period statuary, and finally considers the iconography and suggests a contextual interpretation of their symbolism, possibly related to fire, war and renewal. The aim is to show the high degree of relations that existed between southern Puebla and Teotihuacan during the Early Classic period. Ritual practices of the elites of Santo Nombre were formally related to those of Teotihuacan but at the same time exhibited local stylistic variations.
Resumen: A partir de las excavaciones realizadas en el asentamiento Clásico de Santo Nombre, Puebla, durante 2009 y 2010, se recuperó un grupo de cuatro pequeñas esculturas talladas en basalto y una en piedra caliza, todas de estilo teotihuacano. El hallazgo fue hecho sobre el piso de la plaza de un complejo arquitectónico de tres templos, junto con muchos objetos rituales de cerámica, concha, lapidaria y hueso. Todos estos objetos fueron destruidos y quemados intencionalmente durante un ritual de terminación que tuvo lugar alrededor de 350 d.C. En particular, las esculturas, a veces completas y a veces fragmentadas, fueron encontradas frente a la escalinata del edificio más alto que estaba orientado hacia el poniente. Se trata de bustos rectangulares cuyo rostro representa personajes sin vida con tocados y orejeras. En este artículo se describe el contexto del hallazgo, la comparación del estilo de las esculturas con la estatuaria teotihuacana y otras del periodo Clásico, y finalmente se consideran sus aspectos iconográficos, y una interpretación contextual de su posible simbolismo relacionado con el fuego, la guerra y la renovación. El objetivo es mostrar el alto grado de relación entre el sur de Puebla y Teotihuacan durante el periodo Clásico Temprano. Las prácticas rituales de las élites en Santo Nombre estaban formalmente emparentadas a las de Teotihuacan, pero a la vez exhibían variaciones estilísticas locales.
Zusammenfassung: Bei Ausgrabungen in der klassischen Siedlung Santo Nombre, Puebla, in den Jahren 2009 und 2010 wurde eine Gruppe von fünf kleinen Skulpturen im Stil von Teotihuacan geborgen, von denen vier in Basalt und eine in Kalkstein gemeißelt waren. Der Fund wurde auf dem Boden des Platzes eines architektonischen Komplexes mit drei Tempeln gemacht und umfasste zahlreiche rituelle Objekte aus Keramik, Muscheln, Lapidarium und Knochen; sie wurden vor der Treppe des höchsten der drei Gebäude gefunden, die nach Westen ausgerichtet war. Die Skulpturen, einige davon in Fundlage intakt und andere zersplittert, wurden zusammen mit den Ritualgegenständen während eines Terminationsrituals, das um 350 n. Chr. stattfand, absichtlich zerstört und verbrannt. Die Skulpturen haben die Form von rechteckigen Büsten. Ihre Gesichtsausdrücke deuten darauf hin, dass es sich um leblose Persönlichkeiten handelt, die Kopfbedeckungen und Ohrschmuck tragen. Dieser Artikel beschreibt den Kontext des Fundes, vergleicht den Stil der Santo-Nombre-Skulpturen mit dem von Teotihuacan und anderen Statuen aus der klassischen Periode, betrachtet schließlich die Ikonographie und schlägt eine kontextuelle Interpretation ihrer Symbolik vor, die möglicherweise mit Feuer, Krieg und Erneuerung zu tun hat. Der Beitrag möchte das hohe Maß an Beziehungen aufzeigen, das zwischen dem südlichen Puebla und Teotihuacan während der frühen klassischen Periode bestand. Reading Nicaraguan Ceramics: Yacatecuhtli on the Mesoamerican Frontier

Abstract: Brilliant polychrome pottery from Postclassic Pacific Nicaragua has long been related to the Mixteca-Puebla, or International, style best known from the central highlands of Mexico. That identification, along with ethnohistorical and linguistic information from the early Colonial period has prompted widespread interpretations of cultural affiliations with Nahua and Oto-Manguean migrants into the region in the centuries before European contact. Images of feathered serpents reminiscent of those found in central Mexican pictorial manuscripts suggest a shared belief system involving Quetzalcoatl, a prominent deity associated with wind, the planet Venus, and priestly knowledge. In a recent edition of mexicon (McCafferty 2019) were further identified semasiographic elements on Nicaraguan pottery characteristic of Mixtec codices.
This vessel of the Papagayo Cervantes variety furthers these connections between Pacific Nicaragua and central Mexico. The central image depicts the merchant god, Yacatecuhtli, an avatar of Quetzalcoatl. Detailed ‘reading’ of the iconography identifies diagnostic traits of Yacatecuhtli. Another avatar of Quetzalcoatl, Ehecatl, is represented on the tripod supports of same vessel; this is a very common feature on tripod vessels in the region.
Papagayo Cervantes variety dates to 1000 to 1250 CE based on recent archaeological excavations along the shore of Lake Cocibolca. This predates the accepted dates of central Mexican pictorial manuscripts and related images of Yacatecuhtli, raising the question of the origins of this aspect of the Quetzalcoatl cult and the role that Central America may have played in influencing Mesoamerican religion.
Resumen: La cerámica policroma brillante del Pacífico nicaragüense del Postclásico se ha relacionado durante mucho tiempo con el estilo Mixteca-Puebla, o Internacional, más conocido en el altiplano central de México. Esta identificación, junto con la información etnohistórica y lingüística del período colonial temprano, ha dado lugar a interpretaciones generalizadas de las afiliaciones culturales con los migrantes nahuas y oto-mangues en la región en los siglos anteriores al contacto europeo. Las imágenes de serpientes emplumadas que recuerdan a las encontradas en los manuscritos pictóricos del centro de México sugieren un sistema de creencias compartido que involucra a Quetzalcóatl, una prominente deidad asociada con el viento, el planeta Venus y el conocimiento sacerdotal. En una reciente edición de mexicon (McCafferty 2019) fueron identificados además elementos semasiográficos en la cerámica nicaragüense característicos de los códices mixtecos. Esta vasija de la variedad Papagayo Cervantes fomenta estas conexiones entre la región Pacífica de Nicaragua y el centro de México. La imagen central representa al dios de los comerciantes, Yacatecuhtli, un avatar de Quetzalcoatl. La “lectura” detallada de la iconografía identifica rasgos diagnósticos de Yacatecuhtli. Otro avatar de Quetzalcóatl, Ehécatl, está representado en los soportes del trípode de la misma vasija; esta es una característica muy común en las vasijas trípodes de la región.
La variedad Papagayo Cervantes está fechada entre el año 1000 y el 1250 d.C., según las recientes excavaciones arqueológicas realizadas en la orilla del lago Cocibolca. Esto es anterior a las fechas aceptadas de los manuscritos pictóricos del centro de México y a las imágenes relacionadas con Yacatecuhtli, lo que plantea la cuestión de los orígenes de este aspecto del culto a Quetzalcoatl y el papel que puede haber desempeñado Centroamérica en la influencia sobre la religión mesoamericana.
Zusammenfassung: Die brillante polychrome Keramik aus dem pazifischen Nicaragua der Postklassik wird seit langem mit dem Mixteca-Puebla-Stil, bzw. dem Internationalen Stil in Verbindung gebracht, der aus dem zentralen Hochland von Mexiko bekannt ist. Diese Identifizierung hat zusammen mit ethnohistorischen und linguistischen Informationen aus der frühen Kolonialzeit zu weit verbreiteten Interpretationen der kulturellen Zugehörigkeit zu Nahua und Oto-Mangue-Migranten geführt, die in den Jahrhunderten vor dem europäischen Kontakt in die Region einwanderten. Bilder von gefiederten Schlangen die in zentralmexikanischen Bildhandschriften zu finden sind, lassen auf ein gemeinsames Glaubenssystem schließen, das Quetzalcoatl einbezieht, eine prominente Gottheit, die mit Wind, dem Planeten Venus und priesterlichem Wissen in Verbindung gebracht wird. In einer kürzlich erschienenen Ausgabe von mexicon (McCafferty 2019) wurden außerdem semasiografische Elemente auf nicaraguanischer Keramik identifiziert, die für mixtekische Codices charakteristisch sind. Dieses Gefäß der Varietät Papagayo Cervantes unterstreicht diese Verbindungen zwischen dem pazifischen Nicaragua und Zentralmexiko. Das zentrale Bild stellt den Gott der Kaufleute Yacatecuhtli dar, einen Avatar von Quetzalcoatl. Bei genauer Betrachtung der Ikonographie lassen sich diagnostische Merkmale von Yacatecuhtli erkennen. Diese Datierung liegt vor den akzeptierten Daten zentralmexikanischer Bildhandschriften und verwandter Bilder von Yacatecuhtli und wirft die Frage nach den Ursprüngen dieses Aspekts des Quetzalcoatl-Kults und der Rolle auf, die Zentralamerika bei der Beeinflussung mesoamerikanischer Religionen gespielt haben könnte.

Using pXRF to Elucidate Obsidian Sources at Formative and Classic Period Matacanela, Veracruz, Mexico

Abstract: Several Preclassic assemblages in the Mesoamerican Gulf lowlands are characterized by obsidian from the Guadalupe Victoria source. Tools produced are characterized by flake-core reduction strategies. The combined visual characteristics of the source material and technology employed are important chronological indicators. But, general similarities in the appearance of the raw material and factors such as variable thickness create the potential for overlap with other sources, such as Pico de Orizaba, though the latter tends to have fewer inclusions, making it more suitable for the production of prismatic blades than Guadalupe Victoria obsidian. Thus, the presence of clear-to-light-gray material in flake form is typically assigned to the Guadalupe Victoria source, whereas clear-to-light-gray material in blade form is often attributed to Pico de Orizaba. The presence of clear-tolight gray material in flake form throughout the occupational sequence of Preclassic and Classic period Matacanela challenged existing ideas about the efficacy of visual designation. As a result, we used pXRF to examine the entire assemblage of visually sourced Guadalupe Victoria material from excavated contexts to evaluate our accuracy in predicting source material. We present these findings, and offer suggestions for refinements of the analysis of materials and interaction patterns in the southern Gulf lowlands.
Resumen: Varios conjuntos preclásicos en las tierras bajas del Golfo mesoamericano se caracterizan por la presencia de la obsidiana de la fuente de Guadalupe Victoria. Las herramientas producidas se caracterizan por estrategias de reducción de núcleo. Las características visuales combinadas del material de origen y la tecnología empleada son indicadores cronológicos importantes. Sin embargo, las similitudes generales en la apariencia de la materia prima y factores como el espesor variable, crean el potencial de superposición con otras fuentes de obsidiana, como la del Pico de Orizaba, aunque esta última tiende a tener menos inclusiones, lo que la hace más adecuada que la de Guadalupe Victoria para la producción de navajas prismáticas. Por lo tanto, la presencia de material gris traslúcido en forma de lascas se asigna típicamente a la fuente de Guadalupe Victoria, mientras que el material gris traslúcido en forma de navaja prismática a menudo se atribuye a Pico de Orizaba. La presencia de material gris traslúcido en forma de lasca a lo largo de la secuencia ocupacional del período Preclásico y Clásico en Matacanela desafió las ideas existentes sobre la eficacia de la identificación visual. Como resultado, utilizamos fluorescencia de rayos X portable (pXRF, por sus siglas en inglés) para examinar todo el conjunto de material de Guadalupe Victoria identificado por clasificación visual de contextos excavados, para evaluar nuestra precisión en la predicción del origen de material. Presentamos estos hallazgos y ofrecemos sugerencias para refinamientos del análisis de materiales y patrones de interacción en las tierras bajas del sur del Golfo.
Zusammenfassung: Mehrere vorklassische Fundinventare im Tiefland der mesoamerikanischen Golfküste sind durch Obsidian aus Guadalupe-Victoria und Werkzeuge der Kern-Abschlag-Strategie gekennzeichnet. Die Kombination aus optischen Merkmalen des Ausgangsmaterials und die verwendeten Technologien sind wichtige chronologische Indikatoren. Allgemeine Ähnlichkeiten im Erscheinungsbild des Rohmaterials und Faktoren wie die unterschiedliche Dicke führen jedoch zu Überschneidungen mit anderen Quellen, wie z. B. Pico de Orizaba, welcher tendenziell weniger Einschlüsse aufweist und sich daher besser für die Herstellung prismatischer Klingen eignet. Daher werden Abschläge aus klarem bis hellgrauem Material in Form von Abschlägen in der Regel der Guadalupe-Victoria-Quelle zugeordnet, während klares bis hellgraues Material in Klingenform häufig dem Pico de Orizaba zugeschrieben wird. Abschläge aus klarem bis hellgrauem Material, die während des gesamten Besiedlungszeitraums der vorklassischen und klassischen Periode von Matacanela vorkommen, stellen die Zuverlässigkeit optischer Bestimmung in Frage. Daher wurde das gesamte Inventar aus archäologischen Grabungen, welches optisch als Guadalupe-Victoria-Material bestimmt wurde, mittels pXRF untersucht, um die optische Rohstoffbestimmung zu bewerten. Diese Untersuchungsergebnisse eröffnen neue Möglichkeiten zur Verfeinerung von Materialanalysen sowie neue Erkenntnisse über Interaktionsmustern im südlichen Golftiefland.

To grasp the bundle: the funerary usage of bone needles in Late Classic Palenque

Abstract: In this paper I reevaluate the function of bone needles as grave goods from recently excavated burials from Palenque, Chiapas. Although needles are traditionally interpreted as tools that were used by the dead individual while alive, I concur that these instruments, in Palenque’s burials, were consistently used to grasp textile, either in the form of funerary dresses or wrapping bundle. Besides allowing to discover funerary patterns shared among domestic and royal practices, this study wants to contribute to the comprehension of poorly preserved burials from the Maya region.
Resumen: Este estudio es un análisis interpretativo de la función de las agujas de hueso procedentes de algunas sepulturas recientemente excavadas en Palenque, Chiapas. Las agujas son tradicionalmente interpretadas como instrumentos que el individuo enterrado utilizaba durante su vida. Sin embargo, en el caso de los entierros de Palenque, argumento que estos objetos eran usados de forma consistente para cerrar mantas funerarias o envoltorios. Además de permitir identificar patrones funerarios compartidos entre prácticas domésticas y de la realeza, este trabajo pretende contribuir a la comprensión de entierros pobremente preservados de la región maya.
Zusammenfassung: In diesem Beitrag bewerte ich die Funktion von Knochennadeln als Grabbeigaben aus kürzlich ausgegrabenen Gräbern aus Palenque, Chiapas, neu. Obwohl Nadeln traditionell als Werkzeuge interpretiert werden, die der oder die Tote zu Lebzeiten benutzte, sehe ich Hinweise dafür, dass diese Artefakte in den Gräbern von Palenque durchweg zum Befestigen von Textilien verwendet wurden, entweder in Form von Grabkleidern oder Bündeln. Neben der Entdeckung von Bestattungsmustern, die häuslichen und höfischen Praktiken gemeinsam sind, möchte diese Studie zum Verständnis von schlecht erhaltenen Bestattungen aus der Maya-Region beitragen.
