Resumen: Hace cincuenta años Michael Coe ha tratado la estructura del urbanismo de civilizaciones en las selvas tropicales, comparando a los khmer con los mayas clásicos. Los khmer están mucho más conocidos que los mayas, especialmente por el informe del viajero chino Zhou Daguan del siglo XIII. En este artículo quisiera imaginarme, cómo hubiese sido si Zhou hubiera visto Tikal durante el período clásico y hubiera escrito un informe comparable. Al mismo tiempo trato de asumir también su estilo. Tengo entendido que Zhou hubiese considerado a los khmer como muy diferentes de los mayas en muchos aspectos. No obstante, las conclusiones de Michael Coe de los años 1950 y 1960 fueron muy convincentes acerca de las semblanzas en el urbanismo de los khmer y mayas y su integración socioeconómica. A pesar del hecho de que su análisis se publicó en un tiempo cuando la arqueología de los asentamientos estaba todavía en mantillas y el desciframiento de la escritura todavía no había empezado. En particular, Coe anticipó el modelo ‘regal-ritual’ del urbanismo maya que hoy en día es favorecido por muchos investigadores mayas. Este modelo ve en Tikal y en la mayoría de los centros mayas, las sedes de las grandes dinastías y cortes reales, en las cuales sin embargo falten muchas instituciones y formas de la integración urbana que caracterizan las ciudades de la tradición occidental o china.

Abstract: Fifty years ago Michael Coe addressed the nature of urbanism in tropical forest civilizations by comparing the Khmer and the Classic Maya. The Khmer are much better known than the Maya, particularly from the account of the 13th century Chinese traveler Zhou Daguan. My conceit is that Zhou visited Classic Tikal and left a similar account, which I imagine here, retaining as much as possible of his literary voice. I conclude that Zhou would have found the Khmer very different than the Maya in many respects. Michael Coe’s conclusions in the 1950s and 1960s were nevertheless very prescient about basic similarities between Khmer and Maya urbanism and socioeconomic integration, despite the fact that his analysis was done when Maya settlement archaeology was in its infancy and before inscriptions could be deciphered. In particular, Coe anticipated the “regal-ritual” model of Maya urbanism that many archaeologists favor today. This model envisions Tikal and most other Maya centers as great dynastic and court places that lacked many institutions and forms of integration typical of cities in the western or Chinese traditions.

Zusammenfassung: Vor fünfzig Jahren hat Michael Coe die Struktur des Urbanismus von Zivilisationen in tropischen Wäldern angesprochen, indem er die Khmer und die Klassischen Maya miteinander verglich. Die Khmer sind viel besser bekannt als die Maya, insbesondere durch den Bericht des Chinesischen Reisenden Zhou Daguan aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. In diesem Beitrag stelle ich mir vor wie es gewesen wäre, wenn Zhou Tikal zur klassischen Zeit gesehen und einen vergleichbaren Bericht geschrieben hätte. Dabei versuche ich, auch seinen Stil zu übernehmen. Ich gehe davon aus, dass Zhou die Khmer in vielerlei Hinsicht sehr unterschiedlich von den Maya gefunden hätte. Michael Coes Schlussfolgerungen aus den 1950er und 1960er-Jahren waren nichtsdestotrotz sehr überzeugend in Bezug auf die grundlegenden Ähnlichkeiten im Urbanismus der Khmer und der Maya und ihre sozioökonomische Integration, trotz der Tatsache, dass seine Analyse zu einer Zeit erschien, als die Siedlungsarchäologie der Maya noch in ihren Kinderschuhen steckte und die Entzifferung der Schrift noch nicht begonnen hatte. Insbesondere nahm Coe das “regal-ritual”-Modell des Urbanismus der Maya vorweg, das von vielen Maya-Forschern heute favorisiert wird. Dieses Modell sieht in Tikal und den meisten Maya-Zentren die Sitze der großen Dynastien und Königshöfe, in denen allerdings viele Institutionen und Formen der urbanen Integration fehlen, welche Städte in der westlichen oder der chinesischen Tradition kennzeichnen.
